He surveyed the many vaults and crypts of knowledge and went into them one by one and chanted: Until one fateful day a priest walked into the land of dust collection. And so, they continued to collect dust on their many axes in their many vaults of copyrights, and the land of gamers languished in desolation. Gamer: "Ok fine, CONGRADULATION YOU HAVE AN AXE WIT DUST" Lawyer: "A collection of dust! We are so proud!" *more cheering, self congratulations* Lawyer: "We have an axe collecting dust!"

Gamer: "But why can't you re-release it so people can mod it? Why let it collect dust like an axe?" Lawyer: "The game's rights are secure in our copyright vault!" (translation: We have an axe collecting dust!) *They cheer, applause* "We are the keeper of this knowledge!" (translation: We have an axe collecting dust!) Thankfully one good example is Gog.com that tries to find and buy rights to games that have been obscured by history and left in the dust. Because of copyrights, legalities, etc - while some of it helps to protect against plagiarism for example it also is abused to withhold things from the public. That's selfish.Yeah unfortunately this happens with so many things - games, books, music, films, inventions, etc. Quoted from Suppiluliuma:think about this analogy: it is like M$ had an axe that was only gathering dust, but didn't let anyone else use it, even those with no interest in making money out of it. Would be nice if a new age of title would have the same, rather than waiting years for the community to invent tools itself. Prior to that they even released a beta modding kit. Rome2 for example, has recently had a mod summit, where 7 modders sat down with creative assembly, to talk about modding tools and things they wanted to be moddable.

By now pc game producers realize that rather than fighting modding, they should encourage it since it keeps games alive far longer. It would however be cool to see a new age of empires title, where microsoft keeps modding in account while making the game. RTS as a genre has become a bit less popular, it are mostly the shooters, rpg's and mmo's that are played by people.
AGE OF EMPIRES 1 REMASTERED SERIES
However, since microsoft already continued the series with AoEO (though that wasn't my cup of tea), I think it's possible that a new aoe title could be released in the future, though not particularly likely. Just a make over wont help with any of that.

Aoe has never been as popular as aok.Īoe1 was good for its time, but even the release of aok already showed some of its flaws (pathfinding, trade, scale of map and buildings, no scripting etc). I expect the remake of aok to be little more than a cash cow, knowing how popular the game was. Aoe is simply outdated, even compared to aok. It would be much more logical for them to make AOE4 instead (but don't have high hopes for that too).įrankly speaking, aoe1 does not need a HD remake, it needs a sequel. And look how many bugs and problems AOE2-HD have, even without so many changes. There is no profit in such huge project and no studio will want to do it. This means that they would have to fully recreate the game to be at least as good as AOE2, if they want to sell it. Even the graphics are a little too simple. Also it's too primitive by today's standards (released in 1997!) in many aspects - ai, path finding, Random maps, game interface, unit commands (no formations, attack stances, gather points, farm queue), no gates, no trade, no triggers and hundreds of other missing improvements added to AOE2 later. First of all AOE1 was never that popular and now it's played mostly in Vietnam and China (they don't buy original games, as you can guess). Of course MS won't release HD version of AOE1 - it's totally not worthed. Also they could release a simple pack with improved models and textures instead.
AGE OF EMPIRES 1 REMASTERED FULL
I don't think AOM will have a remake, where did you heard that? AOM doesn't really need a remake as it's a full 3D game and already supports high resolutions (with a command line option).
